After postponing my trip from New Years, I made it back to the Big Apple for the Annual NYU Men's Volleyball Alumni Match vs. the current team. The usual suspects were in town, including BGM - my old coach and other familiar faces from the past, to reminisce and relive their glory days. It was a little different this year with more wives and little kids running through the stands than last year. It was also different this year since I was now part of the alumni side!
We always have the best intentions when we decide to go out the night before the match for a low-key night; however, we always fail miserably. We went to Finnerty's - a classic meeting place - where Belle and I destroyed the competition at darts! I even hit a triple-bullseye!!
A must-try pizza place is Artichoke Pizza in the East Village (yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/artichoke-basilles-pizza-and-brewery-new-york). I had never had this slice of Heaven until this cold Friday night, and let me tell you, it was well worth the 20 minute wait - and Trust me, I hate the cold! Try the Spinach Artichoke - tastes just like the dip.
The next afternoon, after three Gatorades to replenish my electrolytes, we arrived at the Alumni game, where there were no rules and apparently the Alumni won even though at one point they had seven players on the court and two were drinking Budweiser. I was quite impressed that everyone who was out the night before was at the game - no one has lost their touch just yet!
That night was another outing with all the old friends and the new families. A few of the younger ones (as in the Freshman and Sophomores) were sent home early since they couldn't keep up... it'll only be a matter of years until they've caught up and will be on the other side of that net glaring down the youngins!
Can't wait until next year's game!
